We preach unity but exhibit disunity
OMULA EMMANUEL
It is totally wrong to preach unity with our mouths and then make “laws” and policies that foster disunity amongst us as a country; the two cannot go together.
In Nigeria we seem to preach unity with our mouths, on television and on the pages of news papers but make laws and policies that perpetrate disunity amongst us. For instance, of what use is certificate of state of origin, if we say we are one. What do we need federal character and quota system for if we claim to be one Nigeria. How can we ever live together in peace and unity when an Igbo man schooling in Benue is made to pay higher fee than a Benue man studying in the same institution. How can we live together in peace and unity when a mediocre is made to head an organization on the ground of federal character when there are more qualified and competent hands. We preach one Nigerian but would hardly allow a “non indigene” head a federal agency in our state. We preach one Nigeria but would hardly allow a “non indigene” work in our state civil service.
We totally disagree with the policies that encourage the use of state of origin and federal character, when seeking for jobs or admission. Merit must be used as the yardsticks, for admission and employment. How do you expect Mr. A who has first class to be happy when Mr. B who has pass degree is selected or given a job ahead of him ( Mr. A ) on the basis of federal character. Such case points out gross injustice and disregard for merit.
Government at all level must make legislations that would Jettison the use of state of origin and encourage true unity by ensuring that merit is used as yardstick for admission , employment not quota system and federal character. Quota system and federal character not only breed disunity but also make people lazy, because they would always believe that, they do not need to work hard because they will get what they want through quota system or federal character.
